LED lights can benefit any business by saving the business owner money from energy costs. Certain businesses, however, profit uniquely when upgrading their lights. We will be running a series of weekly blog posts describing those industry-specific advantages. For our first post, here are the benefits of LED lights in warehouses.
Warehouses are big spaces. Deep aisles packed high with materials can be dark without proper lighting. In high traffic areas, lights need to run for long hours. This is the recipe for an expensive energy bill. Energy costs for warehouses can total more than 10 percent of total revenue and lighting is the biggest contributor to electricity usage. Replacing older warehouse fixtures with LED lights can minimize the burden of hefty electricity expenses. LEDs can address the unique needs of warehouses, making these large facilities brighter, safer, and less expensive to operate. Here are some of the biggest advantages of LED lights in warehouses:
Bright new LED lights will illuminate all corners of a warehouse facility. LEDs are also more reliable and last longer than other lighting alternatives. Brighter facilities are safer facilities. Warehouses with LED lights will minimize workplace accidents and improve safety.
Better lit facilities improve workplace performance. Studies show that switching to LEDs can improve workplace performance as much as 8 percent compared to other lighting options. Furthermore, by providing better visibility down deep aisles and among a vast array of material, LED lights in warehouses improve performance. Even slight reductions in pulling and picking errors will add a significant productivity bonus.
While some large facilities run lights all day, other warehouses will switch lights on and off for areas that are infrequently used. LEDs offer a huge upgrade in this regard. Unlike other lighting choices that have slow warm-up times, especially when frequently turned on and off, LEDs can be switched immediately to full brightness. Even better, frequent on/off switching does not degrade LEDs or shorten their lifespan. Ditch your slow lights and upgrade to the immediate brightness of LEDs.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, LED lights save on electricity costs. They can reduce lighting-related electricity costs by more the 75 percent. For massive facilities like warehouses, this can add up to tremendous savings. One Lime Energy customer, for example, is now saving more than $30,000 in annual energy costs after upgrading warehouse lighting. While LED lights may have a pricier initial cost, the energy efficient lights pay for themselves over a short amount of time, often less than two years. With support from the local utility this customer recovered his investment in new lights after only 16 months of reduced electricity bills.
This example shows the many benefits of upgrading to LED lights in warehouses. After the customer made an initial investment in LEDs, he immediately upgraded to a safer, brighter, more productive work environment. As a result, after 16 months, he was cash flow positive and now every month he saves $2,700 in energy costs.
More than many other industries, warehouses can benefit from LEDs because of their immense size and long hours. Stay tuned in coming weeks to see how other industries can find their own rewards for switching to LEDs.
